Immersed in sylvan tranquillity, the 5 sunflower holiday farmhouse and restaurant, Il Borgo Incantato, is situated near the hamlet of Pompagnano, only 7 kms from Spoleto.
The Borgo, officially recorded for the first time in 1200 as Villa Ajelli, originated as a 240-acre farm – holding accommodating 10 families and producing one of the highest agricultural incomes in the Spoleto area.
In later years, assigned to the order of the Clarissa nuns, the property was renamed the Convento di Agghielli as may still be witnessed today by a plaque to that effect over the entrance. The building has a characteristic dovecot tower and a charming little church, not available for worship at the present time.
THE NATURE PARK AND ANIMAL SANCTUARY
At the Borgo history merges in with the breath-taking beauty of Nature.
In respectful silence one remains amazed and intrigued by sleek fallow deer fraternising with Sardinian donkeys, tamed wild boar and alpacas.
Then in symbiosis with them we also discover regal Akita Inu dogs mingling with Caucasian sheepdogs, Norwegian Forest cats and many species of birds all of which enliven the Borgo and touch us emotionally.
Just a stroke or an enquiring glance at any one of these creatures is enough to restore and refresh body and soul!
Great attention and care is paid to our animals that, far from being enclosed, are normally free to roam around the 240 acre property. This has accustomed them to people, remember animals have a great capacity to communicate with their eyes. Indeed they seek attention and like to be petted not just receive food!
Guests who particularly wish to see the animals may make a reservation to be accompanied (at set times) by one of our park guides driving a golf car.
The mountain, three springs, a chestnut coppice, a truffle patch of ground, an organic vegetable garden, a large stable for an animal sanctuary and a Saracen Tower, dating back to the year 1,000 all represent the environmental framework of the Borgo Incantato.
The Borgo Incantato farmland is crisscrossed and irrigated by no fewer than three natural springs. This land is very carefully cultivated, employing strictly organic and biodynamic methods, thus providing us with genuine products and authentic flavours for the table.
As for the conservative building restoration it can be said to have been carried out with meticulous care using sophisticated bio-architectural and ‘green’ building techniques thus highlighting the original stonework and brickwork on the walls.
Tiles, entirely handmade, enhance the beauty of the wooden beams which harmoniously extend to the accommodation area. This area is comprised of 9 suites and 5 apartments, each with either a patio or a gazebo and each unique as regards to furnishings and situation.
All suites and apartments are equipped with every comfort, thermally and acoustically insulated, technologically avant-garde and with cable radio in every room.
The whitewashed walls are tinted with natural earth colours while the doors and windows have a natural wax finish.
Together with all this, there can be added the pleasure of strolling through the Borgo’s wood following paths indicated for walkers or cyclists or maybe even reaching the hydro- massage pools in the woods which would further ensure synergy with nature. All this without forgetting the supreme pleasure of relaxing by the swimming pool or in the solarium.
